“So are you guys ready for the latest and greatest winter tradition?”
“Ready as we'll ever be.” Mai sighed and shifted her position on the large mass of pelts, blankets, and rugs that made for furniture in Pakku and Kanna's hearth room.
Ty Lee's bottom lip quivered in its first pout of the morning. “Mai, be nice.”
“I'm always nice.”
“Can we hurry this along?” Pakku drained the last of his breakfast's cod cow stew from its bowl. The hearty meal was doing nothing to improve his disposition. “Some of us have work to do today.”
Kanna nudged him in the small of his back with her foot as she took dishes from the igluvijaq's hearth room to its kitchen. Ty Lee scampered up to help. “Oh hush. Let the young man say his piece.”
“Gotta side with Grampakku on this one, Mat.” Sokka lounged on a pelt next to the central hearth. “

The Hot Place wasn't high on his list of favorable pastures. For one thing, it had almost no grass to eat, much like The Great Stone Place the herd visited last season. For another, it was only a few moons ago that he, the rest of the herd, and many of his herd's kin had stampeded to this very building; fighting their way from the ocean, up the island, and into The Hot Place while the sun had gone dark in the middle of the daytime. Even now this place stank of coal, steel, and all those other reminders of the just finished Hunted Times.
The near-silent sound of silken slippers crunching grass underfoot brought Appa away from his musings. Glancing up, he recognized the figure half-hidden in the shadow of the courtyard wall and instinctively tensed. It was a hunter, an attacker, one of Blue-flame's herd from the Hunted Times. A growl that rumbled like distant thunder issued from deep within his throat, and it was only Life Brother's assurances that the Hunted Times were over, that they h

"Aang, where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
"But why are we going now? It's nearly midnight!"
"That's a surprise too."
Katara bit back a frustrated growl. She opted instead to bend a sheet of snow into ice, just as her boyfriend was about to step onto it. "I know you were raised a nomad Aang, but this is only our fifth night in the South Pole. Do we really have to start travelling again so soon?"
The fifteen-year-old Avatar smiled as he deftly skipped over Katara's sheet of ice. He retaliated with a draft of air that found its way underneath her heavy parka. His smile widened to a grin at her startled gasp. "We're only going bit farther, I promise."
"Good," Katara grumbled as she readjusted the parka around her maturing frame. "We start work on the east side of the city tomorrow, and if I'm late, Pakku won't let me hear the end of it."
"I could always ask him to make an 'Avatar exception' for you."
"What." Katara narrowed her eyes with feigned anger. "You don't think I can handle my

"I can't do this anymore. It's all it's all too much. I'm done."
"Maximos, when you leave they will scatter again. All that has been gained will be lost."
"I want a real life, not this rootless drifting you pushed on me."
"Then you know what must be done. The Source must always have a master."
"You know, sometimes I wonder who mastered whom... I'll let them know."
